A month before Buddy Bakers 200mph run during a private test session, Cale Yarborough in a Boss 429 Mercury was hitting 215mph on the straights of Daytona during qualifying. Buddy Baker had qualified second behind the Mercury with a lap time less then 46.7

On March 24, 1970 Chrysler rented the Talladega Speedway for a private test session. It was during this private test session that Buddy Baker jumped in his Hemi Daytona at 12:00 noon and hit 191.985mph. After multiple stops to tune the engine and suspension Baker finally hit 200mph 5-hours later.

Feb 19 - 192mph qualifies 2nd behind a Mercury

Feb 22 - 149mph average speed at Daytona and finishes 27th. Mercury wins race

March 8 - qualified 4th fastest at Carolina 500

March 24 - 200mph private test session

March 29 - 158mph at Atlanta qualified 3rd fastest. Mercury qualified the fastest at 160mph

April 12 - qualified 5th at Talladega Alabama 500. Ford qualified 2nd.

July 4 - qualified 8th fastest. At Daytona Firecracker 400
Two Mercurys qualified 1st and 3rd. Cale Yarborough's Mercury goes 191mph

Aug 23 - qualified 7th fastest at the Talladega 500. A Ford qualified in 2nd. Bobby Isaac goes 187mph
